Improper VHS Shutdown
The normal method for stopping a service is to use the Remote Service Manager (RSM) in CygNet Explorer. The RSM sends a stop command to the service and its files are closed in an orderly fashion. An improper shutdown occurs if the host server loses power, someone kills the service, etc.
When the VHS experiences an improper shutdown, it cannot be restarted unless either:
- The VHS Check Utility is run against the history database. This check can be performed manually or it can be configured to run automatically when an improper shutdown is detected. See VHS Check Configuration Keywords for information about configuring VHS check to run automatically.
-OR-
- The service is configured to restart using VHS Quick Recovery. If Quick Recovery is enabled, the database that was shutdown improperly will be archived off as a potentially "dirty" database, and the VHS will start with a new database. Then after further analysis, old data can be recovered and imported into the new clean database.
Note: The options listed above are mutually exclusive. Only one of these options may be enabled.
You can use a Service Monitoring Service point to monitor the status of any CygNet service, including the VHS. A status of "Failed" indicates an improper shutdown.
